Baby To Toddler

We’re no longer dealing with a baby! 12-18 months was really fun because this is when Jin started walking, showing free will and getting more involved!

He was also completely settled into nursery so had access to all sort of toys there and was learning so much from other kids.

What Can Toddlers Do At This Age?

There are so many amazing milestones in this 12-18 months phase but it really can vary because I’ve seen toddlers achieve them all at different stages.

It’s difficult to pin point exactly when they’ll do what but here are the kind of wonderful milestones you can expect.

12-14 Months

Great vision
First steps
Better communication like showing they want a choice and also refusing
Begins to self-feed by holding a spoon
Understands simple instructions like ‘Can you bring me that ball please?’
Babbles with possibly some recognisable words

15-18 Months

Walking/running
Starts to scribble
Likes climbing things like the sofa and stairs
Helps around the house like laundry or wiping the table
Responds to directions like ‘Sit down’
Look at picture books on their own
Throws/kicks a ball
Takes toys apart and puts back together

So many great toy suggestions! I especially love that kitchen!

I’m so glad you think so! It’s a little plastic heavy so I think I need to get more natural toys though lol. The kitchen is definitely a great investment, they can play with it for a long time!

This is a great list. I have a 3 year old and a 10 month old. The play kitchen is a favorite in our house starting right around age 1. Will have to try some of the other toys too!

    • BeingNaomi 21 March 2021 at 9:06 pm

Thank you so much! Oh wow, you must be so busy with a 3 year and 10 month old! I have my hands full with just one 1 year old…
Yes the kitchen is definitely a favourite here too, along with the little vehicles!

  • Meika 21 March 2021 at 1:54 pm

Wished I had this list when my son was a baby. He’s 5 now!?

    • BeingNaomi 21 March 2021 at 3:17 pm

      Oh thank you so much!
It’s hard to imagine my 1 year old being 5 right now. I wonder what kind of toys I’ll be writing about when he’s that age ?

  • Kimberlie 21 March 2021 at 12:17 pm

My 4 year old had most of these or some variation of them. Hands down his favorite was the Megablox. He still plays with those now.

    • BeingNaomi 21 March 2021 at 12:37 pm

No way! It’s so great to know that these can be enjoyed until at least 4 years, thank you for sharing!

I love mega bloks! My little boy plays a lot with it and his big brother helps him for making big towers! They also have a wood kitchen…a big success also! They prepare meal every day! 🙂

    • BeingNaomi 18 March 2021 at 3:34 pm

Oh my gosh the Mega Bloks are a must! My son is also building towers but not quite at the stage to make anything else.
We have a wooden kitchen too! I love joining in and playing with all these toys ?

  • Apocalypse Daddy 18 March 2021 at 11:19 am

Love the big duplo bricks, we have some of those. The wooden fishing set looks like great fun. Seeing as we live near a river and often see people fishing on our walks. I try to keep replica phones and tech out of the house, perhaps that isn’t such a great idea with the future my children are heading into?

    • BeingNaomi 18 March 2021 at 3:32 pm

Yes the Duplos are brilliant aren’t they!
I totally know what you mean about keeping tech out… it’s really hard though because the adults are on their phones for work or whatever so the kids like to copy… all in moderation I guess!

I wrote this other blog post called ‘Toys Detox’ and surprisingly, my son didn’t care at all that I removed all the tech toys away! Shows they’re happy to play with anything ?
